Your Winter Thyroid Survival Kit

When your thyroid is underactive, every day can feel like Winter. So imagine how bad it is when it actually is Winter! I’m talking feet like ice blocks, hands numb and rigid with cold, ears and nose growing icicles. So what can you do? Well, short of moving to the Bahamas, there’s not much you can do to stop Winter. BUT there are some handy tricks to keep warm and toasty and happy.

Electric blanket

I honestly don’t know how I would survive Winter without my electric blanket, given that sometimes I’m still shivering with the highest setting ON. It’s so lovely to get into a toasty bed though – just make sure you have a new, up-to-date blanket with safety settings to prevent it overheating.

HotHands

I truly felt for Ana in Frozen when her hands were turning to ice – one Winter I was so cold and numb, I had to wear gloves indoors at work. Gloves get in the way of typing though, so I found “HotHands”. I have no idea how these work – you shake them and they warm up, like freaking magic. There’s also a toe warmer version you can put in your shoe – ahhhh, bliss.

Beanies

My doctor prescribed beanies, scarves and gloves this Winter – he said I should always be warm because thyroid disease can leave you more susceptible to the cold and flu virus. Plus they look super cute, so there’s that.

Hot beverages

An underactive thyroid can dampen our senses of hunger and thirst – which is why this Winter I become very dehydrated without even knowing it. As well as warming the body a cup of herbal tea (not caffeinated) or a light broth will help you stay hydrated, alleviating symptoms like headaches, tiredness and irritability.

Cuddle animals

Do you really need a reason? Fluffy creatures make everything better.
